Flavourly’s exclusive collaboration lager with First Chop is now an award-winner
Flavourly is incredibly happy to announce that First Chop x Flavourly’s WIN has been awarded a 1-star Great Taste Award!
The Great Taste Awards have been around since 1994 and are judged by 144 of the most discerning palates, belonging to food critics, chefs, cooks, restaurateurs, buyers, retailers and producers, as well as food writers and journalists, making Great Taste one of the most coveted of all food and drink awards. As well as a badge of honour, the unmistakeable black and gold Great Taste label is a signpost to an outstanding product, which has been discovered through hours and hours of blind tasting.
The Great Taste judges has this to say about the beer: “In these days of being swamped with ‘New age’ craft beers with Citra, Cascade and Mosaic hops that deliver such high citrus notes, this is a truly ‘old school’ lager and very good for that. It has the sweet fruitiness of a well-conditioned lager, but a distinctive hoppy bitterness.”
While another commented that it’s a, “great looking lager with a wonderful hop filled aroma. This lager is so smooth and fruity, very much an old-fashioned type but very refreshing and thoroughly enjoyable. This has been brewed with great finesse to give a great tasting, hoppy lager.”
WIN is inspired by the classic Austrian lager style; it is a rich and malty Vienna Lager. Classic German lager hops Mittelfruh, Herkules and Hersbrucker lend plenty of balanced floral flavours to this crisp and easy-drinking lager. The finish has just a little refreshing bite of bitterness and comes in at 4.8% ABV.
WIN was first released in 2019 as part of Flavourly’s eighth range of exclusive collaboration beers, brewed in partnership with First Chop. Established in 2012 by lifelong beer enthusiast and former chef Richard Garner, First Chop Brewing Arm has a passion to make great craft beer. They started on a borrowed microbrewery making 400 litres a month but their many awards and the high demand for their beers has meant constant expansion.
Rik, First Chop director said: “It’s always really pleasing to receive an accolade, particularly from the Guild of Fine Food, because you are up against the cream of the crop. We always enter the main beer category too so to gain awards with gluten free beers is a great validation of the quality of our product and vision. Another added bonus to this is that WIN is a beer we’ve made in collaboration with Flavourly, a company I love working with and who have always championed the First Chop brand.”
Rob Gilmour, Senior Buyer at Flavourly said: “WIN is a glorious beer. The Mittelfruh just brings a beautiful floral component to a malt balanced lager; this is the antidote to over the top, one sip wonders. It’s incredibly drinkable, subtle while still complex. It’s a lovely beer made by really decent people and we are delighted to have played our part in bringing it to market. It’s great to see it pick up a well-deserved award – to me it really is one of the stars of our range quality-wise.”
Flavourly would again like to congratulate the First Chop team and thank them for the hard work that goes in to brewing great beers, which can be seen here from WIN’s Great Taste Award.
