Not many breweries in the world are owned by a nation rather than a corporation but since its founding in the town of České Budějovice, (Budweis in German) a hundred and twenty-five years ago, Budweiser Budvar has remained in the hands of the Czech people. Today its ‘shareholders’ number 10 million of the most beer-obsessed people on the planet, so it’s perhaps no surprise that a little of the country’s spirit is infused into the national brewery and its beer. The Czech Republic is also where the first golden lager was brewed, and it is widely regarded as the birthplace of modern-day lager.
Since the founding of the Czech Joint Stock brewery in 1895 the beer now known as Budweiser Budvar has only ever been brewed in its hometown in the Czech Republic. Budweiser Budvar lagers are made using local ingredients of the highest quality including, whole cone Saaz hops, Moravian malt and soft water drawn from a 10,000-year-old source.
These are then aged to perfection in the cellars. One of the beer offerings, Original lager for example, is aged for 7 times longer than most other lagers available, to create a unique, smooth drinking beer that evokes its place of origin.View the Budweiser Budvar page
